BLIA Seminar Held at the Temple 每 Investigating the Original Intent of the Buddha, the Positive Energy of Faith

On 1st July, 60 BLIA attended a one day seminar at Prajna Hall. The day*s varied topics included ※20 questions from Humanistic Buddhism§ by Venerable Abbess Manshin, ※How to be a Dharma Protector?§ by Head Advisor Dolly Tsai, and learning to sing songs from Fo Guang Shan with Venerable Rulian. It is hoped through the lectures everyone can learn the happiness, richness and humanism of Buddhism.

For 20 questions regarding Humanistic Buddhism, the Abbess covered subjects such as ※the Cycle of Birth and Death§ and ※Old age, sickness, death and birth§. The Abbess explained that while the physical body will perish, life will not be extinguished and all the thoughts gathered from this life will be carried to the next, hence we should continuously plant thoughts of renunciation in every present moment. Regarding the Mahayana concept of ※Everyone has Buddha nature§, she reminded everyone that just talking about it will not benefit anyone, but need to be used during daily life. Then how can one ※Uncover their Buddha nature?§ correctly? The Abbess further explained that you can do this by examining whether you are more relaxed day by day? Buddhism is reverse engineering the mind, where you need to take yourself apart and reassemble yourself for the better, which is not unlike the Transformers. On the topic of ※Structure of a life under Humanistic Buddhism§, she talked how the 6 kinds of ordinary beings can arrive at the stage of 4 kinds of sages. Hence if one would like to be liberated then they need to learn and put into action what they*ve learned during daily life, by turning into a passionate person.

In the afternoon everyone learned how to sing and perform hand gestures for Fo Guang Shan songs ※Flying high§ and ※Buddhism relies on me§ etc. This was followed by a lecture from Head Advisor Dolly Tsai titled ※How to be a Dharma Protector?§ She expressed that in accordance to the Dharma starts with supporting and participating in activities. The saying goes that ※Seeking for Bodhi apart from this world, is like finding horns on a rabbit.§ Hence only cultivating in world can lead to completion and to reveal the true attitude of Humanistic Buddhism. The most fundamental spirit of protecting the Dharma is to allow the lineage of Humanistic Buddhism to be localised and passed down. During daily life the principles to follow are the Six Paramitas and actualisation are done through 3 Good Deeds and 4 Kinds of Giving, therefore allowing everything around us to become better.

The day*s seminar was completed with recitations of ※Prayers and Wishes for World Peace§. All the Bodhi seeds planted on the day will become bridges for protecting the right Dharma in New Zealand. Everyone*s enthusiasm to seek the right Dharma not only increases their own energy, but as helps to keep the right Dharma in the world.
