Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva in Every Moment and All Places
Fo Guang Shan (FGS) South Island New Zealand (NZ) held a ※Humanistic Buddhism Seminar§ on 25 February by Dean of Xuanzang Research Institute at Northwest University of China, Professor An Li, LI with at least 80 members from the Buddha＊s Light International Association (BLIA) and Buddhist devotees attending with the title ※Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva in Every Moment and All Places§ to reintroduce the famous Bodhisattva, Avalokitesvara. Attendees like FGS NZ Venerable Abbess Manshin, Riccarton/Wigram Community Board Deputy Chairperson 每 Helen Broughton, Joint Head of Department of Physics & Astronomy and Chemistry for the University of Canterbury 每 Professor Michael Reid, Justices of Peace in Christchurch 每 Ron Wright, President of the Christchurch Multicultural Council 每 Dr Surinder Tandon, NZ Police Road Policing Manager 每 Inspector Al Stewart, Director of PEETO, the Multi Cultural Learning Centre in Christchurch 每 Patrick O＊Connor, FGS South Island Temple Supervisor 每 Venerable Juexi, BLIA South Island NZ President 每 Seeshen Lee, Vice President 每 Louisa Kuo, Elsa Hayes and James Low, North Subchapter Leader 每 Luping Bi and English Subchapter Leader 每 Sally Lim also attended the seminar.
Professor Li shared his findings regarding ※Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva§ all these years and divided it into top ten characteristics. One, A firm wish; Two, Avalokitesvara embodies the spirit of compassion; Three, Avalokitesvara has limitless power; Four, Avalokitesvara has very deep wisdom to a variety of convenience to the public; Five, Avalokitesvara to facilitate access to the convinience and save the sentient beings; Six, Avalokitesvara observes the world with freedom; Seven, however the Avalokitesvara is tired, there＊s always accumulation of practice; Eight, Avalokitesvara is always soft and elegant; Nine, Avalokitesvara has good affinity; Ten, Avalokitesvara assists sentient beings to the Western Land of Amithaba.
At the FAQ session, Professor Li said that if we can learn the spirit of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, we will have a good Buddhist spirit in life. The devotees also asked, what is it like to be in the research centre at the Xuanzang Research Institute? Professor Li hopes that the future of China and the international academic community can co-operate and have an in depth understanding in the teachings of Buddhism. Professor Li encourages those interested to travel to Xi'an in studying Humanistic Buddhism.
For a finale, Venerable Abbess Manshin expressed the fascinating reading of Professor Li years ago which is entitled ※Biography of Sages - Kindness Worldly Bodhisattvas§, especially where Prof Li describes that besides Avalokitesvara, Ksitigarbha, Manjusuri and Samantabhadra, the Matreya Bodhisattva provided joy and positive strength fitting the way of FGS. The abbess encourages everyone to continue in visiting the temple in the future and learn Dharma for a more exciting while improved quality of mind.
