Visit of Students from Lincoln High School

On 2nd August 2017, led by their teacher Rachel, 30 students from Lincoln High School Christchurch visited Fo Guang Shan (FGS) Temple South Island. They were welcome by Buddha Light International Association (BLIA) members Frida Dai, Vicky Han and Kok Wei, Low. In the course of the visit, the students learned about the Buddhist ways of greetings and praying. They were also shown how to express their gratitude to their teacher in the Buddhist manner. The teacher was very touched by the students expression of gratitude, and reciprocated by saying that she too loved the students very much.

Under the guidance of Kok Wei, the visitors learned about some basic Buddhist teachings and the practice of Zen meditation. According to Chan Buddhism, one can practice meditation at all times and under any circumstance, be it while walking, sitting or lying down. The important thing is to be conscious of the present, and not to let ones mind wander around and take over control of oneself. In essence, it is a form of mind-training to self-regulate the mind in some way. Not letting hindrances arise so as to achieve serenity is the aim of Zen meditation. This can be achieved not by sitting meditation alone.

The visit ended with Frida Dai, on behalf of temple, presenting to Rachel the publication FGS NZ 10th Anniversary Report. Rachel expressed great satisfaction on this visit and promised to bring her students for future visits to enhance their spirituality through Humanistic Buddhism.
