New Year Sutra Copying and Buddhist Examination

To enhance Dharma knowledge, FGS South Island held a special ¡®Sutra Copying and Buddhist Examination¡¯ session on New Year¡¯s Day. FGS Minister In Charge Venerable Jue Xi, Venerable Zhijing, BLIA South Island President Bernie Siew, Vice Presidents James Low and Lih-son Ding, with more than 50 BLIA members took part in the event.

Led by Venerable Jue Xi, the congregation first chanted the ¡®88 Buddha¡¯s Great Repentance Sutra¡¯ and then read Venerable Master Hsing Yun¡¯s ¡®New Year Prayer¡¯. This was followed by an examination on the texts of the book ¡®Humanistic Buddhism: Holding True to the Original Intents of Buddha¡¯. Choices of the answers were divided into A, B, C, D and E zones each with properly arranged seats. Before any participant could answer a particular question, they have to first compete for a seat in the designated zone for the particular question. This combination of physical and intellectual activities made the examination more interesting and challenging. In between the questions and answers, Venerable Jue Xi also cleared the participants on the many doubts raised by them. At times, the congregation deviated from the main theme and delved into deeper discussions on the teachings contained in the book ¡®Humanistic Buddhism: Holding True to the Original Intents of Buddha¡¯.
In her speech, Venerable Jue Xi remarked that 2017 was the year of the rooster and could be equated as the year of Bodhisattva. This is because the rooster and Bodhisattva both share the character of being helpful and inquisitive. In addition, Rooster always starts his day early, is hardworking and diligent. Whereas 2018 is the year of the dog. The notable traits of dog are loyalty, faithful and righteous. So 2018 can also be known the year of the ¡®Dharma Protector¡¯¡¯.
Later on, Venerable Jue Xi elaborated on the word ¡®Righteousness¡¯ as defined by Venerable Master Hsing Yun who categorises it into 4 domains: Righteousness among Human Beings, Righteousness between Heaven and Earth, Righteousness in the Society, and Righteousness in the Universe. At the end of the session, Venerable Jue Xi presented the participants with copies of Master Hsing Yun¡¯s Chinese New Year calligraphy with the words of ¡®A Family Legacy of Loyalty and Honour¡¯ and encouraged all to cultivate positivity, treasure affinity and live in the present moment. She wished everyone a peaceful, happy and carefree New Year.
