Lotus Link Dharma Discussion Group – 18 June 2008
Eight of the regular members and Venerable Miaoyu welcomed a new member to the group. Jeff has attended several Saturday Services and is keen to find out more about Humanistic Buddhism.
The discussion topic this evening was Bodhisattva, the defining feature of Mahayana Buddhism. Venerable Miaoyu opened the discussion by asking the group to give an explanation of Arhat. They then talked about the 52 stages of the Bodhisattva and the difference between ‘earthly’ and ‘transcended’ Bodhisattva. Earthly Bodhisattva (human beings) endure great testing but by saying ‘I am a Buddha’, which the group did several times, they can create their intention and determination to practice in the Bodhisattva Path. It was explained that there are several characteristics and methods that Bodhisattvas have to obtain and cultivate, like the ‘Six Paramita’ and ‘Four Great Vows’. The group was reminded to work for the welfare and happiness of all beings, have determination and always be mindful of Dharma joy by being positive and having the right view. They shared their understanding and experience in benefiting the self and others to gain more understanding of the real meaning of Humanistic Buddhism.
The talks and discussion regarding the Bodhisattva Path will continue on Wednesday 2 July.
