“How do people get interested in Buddhism?”

Xiang Ji Humanistic Study Group – 18 June 2008

Venerable Miaoyu led a guided discussion for the Xiang Ji Humanistic Study Group on the afternoon of Wednesday 18 June. About ten members participated and discussed ideas about the question, “How do people get interested in Buddhism?”

Members held a variety of viewpoints and suggested a range of ideas, including an interest in Buddhism arising according to a person’s faith, according to their doubt, according to their realisations and / or according to not having attachments. The right conditions being present are also a factor in enabling a person to come in contact with Buddhism.

Members shared their experiences and Dharma joy with each other, arising from their practice of following the Bodhisattva Path.

The conclusion is that, we enter into Buddhism according to our faith and our faith in Buddhism helps us obtain strength to overcome or transcend ourselves. The Venerable took Mahakasyapa practice as a good example that cultivation has to be turned into action and improvement, during our progress in walking along the path to Buddhahood.

At the conclusion of the discussion, all members worked together to help clear and beautify the Zen garden.
