FGS Auckland Shares Rice Dumplings with Police Officers to Foster Community Harmony

The Five Grains Dumpling made by Fo Guang Shan New Zealand is highly popular among both devotees and the public for its rich fillings and aromatic flavor. With the approach of the Dragon Boat Festival, on 5th June 2024, the Abbess of FGS NZ Venerable Manshin shared the rice dumplings to the neighboring Counties Manukau East Police Station, bringing warmth and blessings to the police officers. This gesture was a token of gratitude for their tireless efforts in maintaining community safety on the front lines.

Senior Sergeant Anson LIN and Sergeant Richard Bracey brought the rice dumpling back to the station to share with their colleagues. Many police officers, encountering rice dumplings for the first time, were intrigued by the aromatic leaves enclosing a variety of rich ingredients. The two officers also congratulated Abbess Manshin on receiving the New Zealand Order of Merit 2024 and appreciated her selfless services for over 20 years, making significant contributions in community building, education projects, cultural arts, public welfare and spiritual cultivation. Snr Sgt LIN specifically expressed gratitude to Abbess for her role as the patron of Wing 261, continuously providing care and support to the police officers. Sgt Bracey, tasting rice dumpling for the first time, marveled at its soft and fragrant texture, filled with healthy ingredients like chestnuts, mushrooms and beans.

The Abbess introduced the customs of the Dragon Boat Festival to the police officers, explaining that it is a vital part of traditional Chinese culture, carrying historical memories and commemorating the loyalty of the poet Qu Yuan to his country. The Abbess also prepared printed stories of Qu Yuan to take back to the station, enriching the understanding of the festival’s cultural significance.
