BLIA North Island Collaborate with Schools Building a Greener Earth

In alignment with the environmental principles of Environmental and Spiritual Preservation established by Fo Guang Shan Founder, Venerable Master Hsing Yun, and inspired by a global initiative by Buddha’s Light International Association (BLIA) and the Pure Green Foundation, BLIA members New Zealand hosted Auckland’s third VegRun event on 8 November 2024 at Ormiston Primary School. The BLIA North Island Chapter President Yulin KU, Venerable Nengchien and 7 BLIA members went to support the student. Additionally, Principal Heath McNeil also joined along to cheer for the 400 Year 3 and 4 students participating in this health-focused, eco-friendly run.

Ormiston Primary School has enjoyed a close and ongoing relationship with Fo Guang Shan Temple for nearly a decade, taking part annually in education programs such as the 3G4G Festival of Cultural Sharing. This is the school’s second year participating in the VegRun, and as the BLIA members arrived, students waved cheerfully, forming lotus gestures with their hands while chanting excitedly, We’re ready for VegRun!

The students warmed up to the lively 3G4G song, embodying the spirit of positivity and enthusiasm. Teacher Edith Press encouraged them to complete the run at their own pace, focusing on determination over speed. Teacher noted that students often engage with digital devices, so this event provided an excellent opportunity to reconnect with outdoor activity, promoting both physical fitness and a healthful outlook.

The run was split into boys’ and girls’ categories, and with the starting whistle, students raced like a rocket towards the finish line. Along the route, teachers, parents and BLIA members cheered them on, while others waited enthusiastically in place, forming an impromptu cheer squad. The atmosphere was alive with excitement, much like a festive sports day.

At the close of the race, Principal McNeil announced the top four runners in each category, awarding each winner a Three Goodness Gift. The young recipients were thrilled, expressing heartfelt thanks for the thoughtful gifts from the Temple. Principal McNeil extended his gratitude to BLIA North Island for their dedication to students’ education, fostering a culture of Do Good Deeds, Say Good Words, Think Good Thoughts and inspiring a sense of environmental stewardship and interconnectedness among the students. Student Harper shared that while running was tiring, the thought of helping to plant trees kept her going. Another student Kailey conveyed her thanks to for organising such a fun VegRun and for the post-run treat of delicious apples.

BLIA North Island has collaborated with schools on three VegRun events, drawing over a thousand student participants this year. In support of New Zealand’s reforestation, BLIA sponsors a tree for every 5 kilometres completed, bringing the current total to 350 trees. Two additional schools will join the VegRun initiative next week, advancing the shared vision of transforming the Earth into a sustainable Pure Land.
