BLIA South Island Members Attended the Launching of Open Christchurch

Open Christchurch, an acclaimed architectural tour hosted by the New Zealand Green Charity Organisation Te Pūtahi Centre for Architecture and City Making, will be held from 2nd to 4th May, 2025. The distinctive building of Fo Guang Shan Christchurch has been selected for the fourth time this year as one of the featured sites of Open Christchurch. Buddha’s Light International Association (BLIA) South Island was invited to attend the launch of the event, held on 20th March at Holy Trinity Avonside in the city centre. Four BLIA South Island representatives, including Subchapter Senior Advisor Sally LIM, committee members Deirdre Johns and other participated in the event.

Open Christchurch 2025 will showcase 51 buildings, two designed landscaped gardens, 5 guided walks and more than 40 activities, making it the largest Open Day event to date. Alongside Fo Guang Shan Temple South Island, other notable featured sites include the city’s largest building, Te Kaha Stadium, the Chapel of St Thérèse of Lisieux, the cultural landmark Court Theatre etc.

Distinguished guests present at the launch included Christchurch City Councillors Sarah Templeton and Yani Johanson, MP Reuben Davidson, New Zealand Institute of Architects President Huia Reriti and representatives of the selected buildings and community organisations. City Councillor Sarah Templeton remarked that Open Christchurch offers a valuable opportunity for people to learn more about and celebrate their city. Huia Reriti, President of the Architects Association, highlighted the role architects play in energy conservation, improving building efficiency, exploring new materials, and fostering harmony between buildings and the environment.

During the launch, BLIA South Island members introduced the Fo Guang Shan Temple Christchurch to the guests and took the opportunity to promote the upcoming Little Prince Family Fun Day Festival 2025, scheduled for 12 April. Erica Austin, event manager for Open Christchurch, expressed that the staff and volunteers at FGS always welcoming, making visitors feel happy and enthusiastic. Raylene, the representative of College House, also praised the architecture of FGS Christchurch and shared her fondness for the Water Drop Café, noting that she often brings friends to visit and enjoy the delicious vegetarian food.
