On 16th September 2022, 142 students from Ormiston Senior College visited the FGS Auckland Temple in the morning. Taking a 2 km walk led by teacher Subash, the students were excited to discover the activities at the Temple such as writing Chinese calligraphy, striking the wishing bell, mindfulness meditation, watched the movie of The Life of the Buddha and learned the Three Act of Goodness and Four Givings (3G4G) values in order to be a part in better contributing to a harmonious society.
Teachers and students enjoyed every activities during the visit, and were eager to share their thoughts. Teacher Robert and Atesh shared that this is a wonderful cultural exchange and invaluable experience for all involved. Positive thinking is bought about by the 3G4G values, whereas the calm and positive atmosphere in the Temple relieves body and mind. Teacher Vanessa appreciated the Temple for the thoughtful arrangement. By sharing the correct way to make incense offering, explored the focus mind through various activities, students were able to apply mindfulness in their daily lives.
Students Abigail and Ryan expressed how impressed they were in learning to hold the calligraphy pen, to learn the simple Chinese characters for the first time and overcome the difficulties in the process of writing. Besides that, YAD Nadine shared that it was an honor to be part of the team. As this was her first time as a tour guide, she felt proud with the students who tried calligraphy and believed everyone benefited from the session.
One of the highlights of the visit was that over half of the students and teachers had visited the Temple before. Teacher Subash expressed his gratitude to the Temple and looking forward to the students to participate in the Temple volunteer program since it is a great way to serve the community. Furthermore, he is excited to share about this wonderful culture experience with his colleagues to bring more students to visit.
