BLIA South Island Year-End Gathering Passing the Torch to New Leadership

On 21st December 2024, the 14th inauguration ceremony for the new president of the BLIA South Island was held alongside a year-end gathering to celebrate the Winter Solstice. The event was attended by FGS NZ Abbess Manshin, Minister in Charge of FGS Christchurch, Venerable Juexi, BLIA committees and members, BLIA Young Adult Division (YAD) and nearly 70 participants.

The event included the handover ceremony for the new president, the presentation of certificates to new board members and a special recognition of the Association’s 27 years of service with the New Zealand Red Cross Meals on Wheels programme. Recent key events were also highlighted: including the Abbess representing New Zealand at the 6th World Buddhist Forum in China, the visit of Most Venerable Hsin Bau to South Island, the Dunhuang Art Exhibition, Tea Meditation event, the Global VegRun and etc. The BLIA YAD also presented an energetic dance performance.

Bernie SIEW, the Former President who served two terms, expressed his gratitude to BLIA members for their unwavering support, the guidance of Abbess Manshin and Venerable Juexi and the platform provided by the Temple that enabled him to fulfil his duties. He shared how connecting with fellow members during events created meaningful memories and lasting friendships rooted in Dharma. A video prepared by the committee members was shown to thank President SIEW for his leadership, showcasing the association’s efforts to promote harmony and community engagement.

Newly Appointed President James LOW expressed his appreciation for the Temple and BLIA members’ support. Drawing inspiration from the parable of The Poor Son in the Lotus Sutra, he encouraged everyone to aspire for self-improvement, starting as volunteers and progressing to members and leaders, applying the Dharma in life and following the teachings of Venerable Master Hsing Yun to make greater contributions to society.

FGS NZ Abbess Manshin highlighted the importance of Courage, from the FGS Founder Venerable Master Hsing Yun’s teaching, encouraging everyone to take responsibility and actively participate in activities to deepen their understanding. Abbess shared her journey that serving in Oceania and her insights from attending in the World Buddhist Forum. Drawing on examples from the Auckland Art Salon and Christchurch Dunhuang Art Exhibition, Abbess urged members to enrich their lives by taking part in BLIA events and supporting the Temple.

The event concluded with the Temple presenting 2025 calendars and auspicious gifts to attendees. Participants delighted in Tangyuan (rice dumplings) and refreshments while sharing warm conversations, bringing the gathering to a joyful and harmonious close.
