Artists’ Insight Forum at FGY Art Gallery NZ Creating a Pure Land of Art and Mind

On 2nd November, during the 8th Art Salon exhibition of 2024, Fo Guang Yuan Art Gallery NZ hosted its first Artists’ Insight Forum. This session featured Curator Abbess Manshin of FGY Art Gallery NZ, along with painter William Robert Boyd, resin artist Leda Daniel, mixed media artist Logan Bow, Marion Gordon-Flower and photographer Agnès Desombiaux-Sigley. Together, they explored the connection between the Temple and art, the gallery’s unique role within the community and the impact of the Art Salon on local culture, presenting a rich, in-depth dialogue on art and spirituality for the audience.

The artists shared their experiences and insights, agreeing that the fusion of Fo Guang Shan’s tranquil atmosphere with art provides an inspiring environment where their work can be fully appreciated and respected. William Robert Boyd described the Temple as a safe space brimming with creativity and free from judgement or negativity. He vividly recounted the transformative experience of entering the grounds, moving through the car park, walking past the incense burner and into the Front Shrine—a journey that felt like entering a different world where one’s mindset shifts, infused with energy from the positive and vibrant atmosphere. Boyd expressed his gratitude for the gallery’s role in offering artists a valued platform to share their creativity, which he feels enriches the spiritual essence of their work and creative journey.

Resin artist Leda Daniel, who has exhibited for four consecutive years, appreciated the Art Salon team for their professionalism, noting how the exhibition has become increasingly diverse and inclusive, reflecting its commitment to the community. Logan Bow, a 20-year-old mixed media artist exhibiting for the first time, and his family were deeply impressed by the integration of art and architecture, observing how the space fosters a strong community bond, transcending the concept of a traditional art exhibition. Artists Marion Gordon-Flower and Agnès Desombiaux-Sigley shared their hope that their creations, much like the Temple itself, would lead viewers into new realms, enabling a transformative experience that shifts focus from daily routines to what truly matters in life.

Curator Abbess Manshin reflected on her 30 years of service in Australia and New Zealand, emphasising her dedication to creating an open, positive space at the Temple where visitors can find peace of mind and undergo a personal transformation, rediscovering their inner potential and strength. Abbess commended the artists’ perceptive insights and expressed her gratitude for their collaboration with Fo Guang Shan, which collectively brings to life the Founder, Venerable Master Hsing Yun’s values of the Three Acts of Goodness and Four Givings (3G4G), enhancing both community cohesion and cultural vibrancy.

Earlier that same morning, the Art Buffet took place at Cloud Corner. Nearly 150 artists, Friends of FGY Art Gallery, art enthusiasts and community members attended with joy. Under the guidance of Minister in Charge of FGS Auckland Venerable Rulian, the team carefully arranged a refined venue, offering exquisite refreshments and a lively performance by YAD members. The event beautifully combined art with vegetarian cuisine, creating a high-quality cultural feast.
