The 8th Art Salon Bringing Artists Together for Creation and Inspiration

The 8th Art Salon at Fo Guang Yuan Art Gallery Auckland is in full swing, with preparations for the exhibition reaching their peak. As of 8th September 2024, nearly 100 artists from Auckland and surrounding areas had personally delivered their artworks to the FGS Buddhist Temple in Auckland. This year’s exhibition will feature over ten different types of art, including paintings, ceramics, sculptures, photography and textile art. The Howick Photography Society has also contributed digital works from 25 photographers. In total, 193 artists are participating in the event, with the main exhibition in September featuring 129 of them, while 45 others will have their work displayed at the Summer Art Salon extension in January next year.

Now in its eighth year, the Art Salon has become a highly anticipated annual exhibition for local artists. Many participants were recommended by friends of artists who had previously exhibited. Among the exhibitors are family groups, such as mothers and daughters, siblings and teacher-student duos and friends. Artists joyfully shared stories of their creative process and inspiration with the exhibition team. Many long-time participants expressed their gratitude for the chance to be involved, while newcomers were thrilled to have the opportunity to showcase their work in such a revered setting.

Three artists from Helensville in Auckland’s western suburbs arrived together to deliver their works. Wood sculptor Raymond G. Scott explained that he was initially invited and then brought in his neighbour, painter Ruth Sumner, who in turn invited her friend, William Robert Boyd. They later discovered that five artists from the Helensville Art Community were participating in the exhibition, with everyone excited about the event. Raymond and his wife are passionate about the atmosphere at the Buddhist Temple and take the opportunity to ring the bell to make a wish. They also purchased a copy of 366 Days with Wisdom, written by the Founder of the FGS Buddhist Order, Venerable Master Hsing Yun. Ruth, participating for the first time, is looking forward to attending the opening ceremony with her husband. William plans to invite friends to enjoy the artistic feast during the cherry blossom season, expressing that Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Temple offers a place of spiritual cleansing, which is much needed by the community.

The recent interactions with artists while receiving their works have truly highlighted the wonderful connections we are forming, said the volunteers at the gallery. The Art Salon serves as a bridge between Fo Guang Yuan Art Gallery and New Zealand artists, providing a platform aligned with the Founder’s belief in sharing kind values through art.

The Curator of FGY Art Gallery NZ Abbess Manshin, shared that the Temple aims to support community services that reflect the values of Truth, goodness and beauty. Through the Art Salon, the Temple seeks to inspire a deeper appreciation for the arts, fostering harmony and a sense of connection within the community.
