On 18th August 2024, the Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Temple New Zealand held its annual Sangha Day Celebration, organised by the Buddha’s Light International Association (BLIA) New Zealand, commenced with the resonant sound of bell and drum. The ceremony was attended by over 300 participants, including BLIA members from both North and South Islands, youth members, students from the Children’s Dharma Class and devotees. The service was led by the Abbess Manshin of FGS NZ, who guided the congregation in chanting the Ullambana Sutra.
During the ceremony, BLIA members offered exquisite delicacies to the monastics as an act of reverence. In addition, heartfelt gratitude was expressed through various performances, acknowledging the contributions of the Founding Master, Venerable Hsing Yun, for establishing the Temple in New Zealand and offering service that benefits the country. The atmosphere was filled with applause, culminating in the collective singing of Welcome Home, which heightened the sense of gratitude among all present.
Abbess Manshin shared the wisdom of the Founding Master, emphasising four key principles for practising the Dharma in daily life: 1, to cultivate a righteous mind in order to attain enlightenment; 2, learn to let go for a quality life; 3, practice compassion and wisdom to benefit others; 4, to understand the concept of no-self for a fulfilled life. The Abbess also explained the significance of the offering ceremony, highlighting that it not only fulfils the traditional role of supporting the monastic community but also enriches one’s spiritual practice, transforming the so-called Ghost Month of July into a Month of Filial Piety and a Month of Meritorious Deeds through the collective practice of virtue and wisdom.
President Yulin KU of the BLIA North Island Chapter expressed deep gratitude, noting the importance of remembering and honouring the contributions of the Founding Master who generously established two Temples in New Zealand. She acknowledged the continuous support and guidance from the monastics, describing them as life mentors who patiently nurture and guide the community. She called upon everyone to join the BLIA family and contribute more services to New Zealand.
President Bernie SIEW of the South Island Chapter emphasised that the offering ceremony is a day of great joy for the Buddha. He reiterated that sincere Buddhist practitioners start their journey by taking refuge in the Triple Gems, with the Sangha being the closest to them. He praised the selfless efforts of the monastics who tirelessly spread the Dharma, supporting the spiritual growth of the BLIA members. He encouraged everyone to cherish these affinities by continuing to support the Sangha.
In conclusion, the participants lined up in the courtyard to offer their respects to the monastics, expressing their deep gratitude to the Founding Master Venerable Hsing Yun, and the resident monastics for providing them with opportunities to cultivate merit and wisdom, ensuring that their hearts are filled with brightness and strength.
