On 15th March 2025, the University of Auckland Fo Guang Club hosted a welcoming orientation at Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Temple Auckland. The event brought together 21 YAD (Young Adult Division) committee members and the Fo Guang Club, all joyfully embracing a mindset of positivity and enthusiasm to enrich their university journey.
The YAD committee led a series of ice-breaking activities to kick off the event, creating a warm, inclusive atmosphere. Members learned the song I Have Faith, immersing themselves in the uplifting spirit of Humanistic Buddhism. The program featured a guided Temple tour, a visit to the Prince Siddhartha Exhibition, a screening of The Life of the Buddha and an introduction to the life and legacy of the Founder Fo Guang Shan’s Buddhist Order, Venerable Master Hsing Yun. A highlight was the story of the Master’s One-Stroke Calligraphy, a powerful example of perseverance and compassion shared by former club President Edwin Teoh. Despite facing health challenges, the Venerable Master continued to give His compassionate wisdom through his calligraphy, inspiring attendees to live with purpose and resilience.
Abbess Manshin of FGS NZ offered a heartfelt message on the value of time. Abbess reminded participants that life is short and time is precious, encouraging them to make the most of every opportunity for growth. Abbess shared the initial aspirations of constructing the Temple into a place where visitors find peace, joy and serenity. Abbess highlighted the Temple as a platform for youth to develop responsibility, overcome challenges and cultivate teamwork.
Committee member Roger shared how the Temple became a pillar of support during his university years, especially during the pandemic, helping him feel the warmth of the Fo Guang family. Alan reflected on the valuable organisational and communication skills he gained through planning activities, while Regina credited her role on the YAD committee with driving her personal growth. She encouraged fellow students to join the Temple events, spread kindness and contribute positively to society.
The welcoming orientation introduced new members to the Temple’s compassionate and enriching environment. Through shared stories, warm discussions and team-building activities, students were inspired to carry forward the values of kindness, resilience, and community. As they embark on their academic paths, the support of the Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Temple will continue to be a guiding light for their growth and service.
