Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Temple New Zealand was recognised by the New Zealand Gardens Trust on 15 December 2025 as a Garden of Significance, receiving a four-star rating out of six stars. The Trust noted that the gardens are not only a landscaped space, but also an important platform for promoting cultural exchange, spiritual education, artistic aesthetics and social care. Whether visitors are seeking inner peace or taking part in cultural activities, the Temple offers a rich and meaningful experience.
Abbess Manshin of the Order has led the team in tending and caring for the Temple gardens since the start, shaping the Temple grounds into a space that calms and uplifts the mind. The Trust’s assessment team visited the site in Auckland on 8 November and praised the orderly and well-maintained environment, which radiates a deep sense of tranquillity and Chan spirit. Lead Assessor Paul Roper Gee shared that the management team’s professional skills, experience and long-term dedication were key reasons the gardens stood out.
Receiving a four-star rating from a respected national horticultural organisation marks another important milestone for the Temple. The recognition affirms not only the care given to garden design and aesthetics, but also the Temple’s long-term efforts in cultural integration and spiritual education. Over the years, these efforts have shaped the Temple into a place where the public can enjoy nature, experience a peaceful atmosphere and reconnect with their inner selves.
The New Zealand Gardens Trust was established in 2004 to promote excellence in gardens and horticulture across New Zealand, recognising gardens as spaces of culture, heritage and inspiration. Over time, the Trust has built a national network of gardens, plant collections and gardening enthusiasts, helping to preserve plant diversity, deepen horticultural knowledge and inspire future generations. It currently has more than 110 member gardens, assessed by qualified horticulturists and landscape architects. Through sharing diverse plantings, landscape design and garden philosophy, the Trust also supports the conservation of significant plant species and raises public awareness of environmental care.
