The World Tai Chi Day is celebrated each year on the last Saturday of April and this year was held on 24 April 2010 in Barry Curtis Park which is located adjacent to Fo Guang Shan Temple (North Island). Venerable Miao Yu took 5 members of the English Saturday Service members to participate in the event which attracted over 50 participants from 5 different Tai Chi organisations who demonstrates different schools of Tai Chi. Venerable Miao Yu was invited to give a speech on the benefits of the Buddhist motive Tai Chi which leads to purification of our body and mind. She led the participants to enjoy the motive meditation moments of Buddhist Tai Chi and attracted 13 new members to join the English Saturday Service.
After the Tai Chi, 18 participants returned to the Temple where Venerable Miao Yu guided them in slow walk meditation across the field of merit. She led the group to contemplate the mondo grass along the path of the Buddhahood, which symbolizes obstacles we have to overcome along our journey through life. It also symbolizes attaining Buddhahood through constant practice.
During the group discussion, Venerable Miao Yu explained different methods of meditation; beginners can practice meditation by adjusting their sitting posture, followed by concentrating on their breathing and ultimately attaining the true purpose of meditation, which is to focus the mind.
