Prayer for Peace at Christchurch’s World Peace Bell

On 11th March 2020, the World Peace Bell Association New Zealand Chapter, held a Prayer for Peace ceremony at its Peace Bell site in Hagley Park, Christchurch to pray for victims of the Japanese 11th March 2011 Tohoku Tsunami, and the Christchurch 2019 Mosques Shooting Incident. Fo Guang Shan (FGS) Temple South Island and Buddha’s Light International (BLIA) South Island were invited for the occasion, and they were represented by Director Kok-Wei Low and other BLIA members. Other guests of honour included Mr. David Bolam-Smith of World Peace Bell Association New Zealand Chapter, Director of the Consular Office of Japan Canterbury region Mr. David Tsunakake, Christchurch Christian Faith Representative Priest Ben, and other members of the public.

Representing the Japanese Government, Mr. David Tsunakake expressed his deep grievances for the victims of both the Japanese Tsunami and the Christchurch Shooting and hoped that the people can pull themselves out of the tragedies and face the future with renewed vigour. Priest Ben read out the message of condolences for victims of the two incidents and hoped that the survivors can face their future with stronger determination. The 5 BLIA members in reciting the Heart Sutra and in the prayer for transferring merits to the victims. Afterwards, the participants took turn striking the Peace Bell, wishing for a tranquil and peaceful World free from disasters.
