On 9th August 2025, FGS Christchurch held the Ullambana Ksitigarbha Dharma Service, led by FGS NZ Abbess Manshin. Devotees recited The Original Vows of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva Sutra, dedicating merits to ancestors and all beings across the ten directions and praying for peace, wellbeing and family harmony. Sixty participants attended the service.
Abbess Manshin explained that, according to the Kṣitigarbha Sutra, beings may ascend to heaven or fall into hell due to two conditions: the pull of karma and the power of vows. The cycles of rebirth in the six realms, as well as the ups and downs of life, are shaped by both karma and vow-power. Quoting the Yogācāra Offering Service, “Fixed karma cannot be changed, but with the power of samādhi, all obstacles accumulated in the past can be eliminated,” this is the principle of cause and effect. Abbess further explained that karma is created through body, speech and mind, encompassing wholesome, unwholesome and indeterminate actions. Although fixed karma cannot be reversed, it can be lessened through virtuous deeds and the accumulation of merit. With the support of samādhi and right mindfulness, even heavy karmic obstacles can gradually be lessened and eliminated.
Abbess praised the congregation for gathering early in the morning to recite the sutra, embodying the spirit of filial piety. Abbess encouraged everyone to cultivate vows, strengthen daily practice and acknowledge the importance of passing down the faith to the next generation. With vows, there will be the protection of heavenly beings and the growth of wisdom on the Buddhist path.
At the end of the ceremony, the temple prepared gifts for participants to bring home as blessings of peace and joy.
