On 21st October 2025, Fo Guang Shan Christchurch and the BLIA South Island held the second Global VegRun Charity Run at Hornby High School. A total of 265 teachers and students participated, collectively achieving an impressive result of 110 trees planted. BLIA South Island Vice President ZHANG Dong and six BLIA members were present to support the event.
Hornby High School has maintained a long-standing relationship with the Temple. Since joining the VegRun – You Run, I Plant Trees initiative in 2023, this marks the fourth consecutive year the school has participated. As part of their commitment to environmental sustainability, the BLIA South Island Association donates one tree for every 5 kilometres run by students, in support of New Zealand’s national tree-planting organization, Trees That Count.
The run was held on the school field, starting with a briefing for the students. BLIA representative Elsa Hayes then introduced the origins and significance of the VegRun. On the field, students ran, walked, and some dressed in vegetable-themed costumes, creating a lively atmosphere.
Teacher Quenten Brown shared that the event helped students embrace the value of caring for the Earth. Not only did the run promote physical and mental well-being, but it was also a privilege to participate in such a meaningful activity. Many students expressed feeling refreshed and proud of contributing to environmental protection.
At the finish line, each participant received an auspicious apple and the air was filled with laughter and joy. The Global VegRun Charity Run continues to strengthen the connection between the community and the Temple, bringing people together in shared efforts toward a greener and more compassionate world.
