2025 FGS Cherry Blossom Festival Unites Community with Culture, Art and Blessings

On 8th November, Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Temple Auckland hosted 2025 Cherry Blossom Festival, drawing over 2,000 attendees who came to enjoy the cherry blossoms and experience a cultural and artistic celebration. Abbess Manshin of Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Temple New Zealand, led Māori elders including Ruapōtaka Marae Co-Chair Georgie Thompson and Auckland Council Māori Advisor Ani Makea on a tour of the Venerable Master Hsing Yun’s One-Stroke Calligraphy Exhibition. They offered a light in tribute to the Founding Master, and the elders also conducted a Karakia to express their reverence and respect. For the first time, a judging delegation from the New Zealand Garden Trust visited the Temple to evaluate the gardens. They praised the meticulously maintained and tranquil environment, describing the serene atmosphere as profoundly moving.

This year’s festival offered diverse programs reflecting the spirit of the Three Acts of Goodness and Four Givings through service. Over 150 participants joined the Baby Blessing Ceremony, where 60 infants received compassionate blessings and purification. As part of the 9th Art Salon, 24 local artists held live demonstrations throughout the Temple, sharing a vibrant showcase of visual and cultural expression. The artists expressed heartfelt thanks for the Temple’s support, with ceramicist Richard Monk noting that the deep sense of belonging he feels continues to inspire his creative work.

Classic cars from clubs including the Vintage Car Club, the Austin Flying ‘A’ Enthusiasts Car Club, and the Rover Car Club were on display, with 32 rare vehicles, averaging over 100 years old, creating a striking showcase. At the Abbess’s invitation, the car owners sounded their horns in unison, creating a joyful symphony that added excitement to the event. Meanwhile, tea practitioners from the BLIA North Island Chapter guided guests in Tea Meditation at the Cloud Corner, where participants engaged in seated meditation, flower offerings and mindful tea appreciation, an invitation to reconnect with the true self amidst life’s busyness.

The lively crowds brought energy and joy to the local market, with many stallholders expressing that being able to set up at the Temple was a special blessing. The Cherry Blossom Festival, using culture as a bridge and art as its language, continues to cultivate a harmonious society with joy.
