Organised by BLIA Oceania and hosted by the Sydney Chapter, the 2025 Oceania Buddhism Examination was held on 9th November at Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Temple Auckland. The exam was based on Epoch of the Buddha’s Light, by the Founding Master of FGS Buddhist Order, Venerable Master Hsing Yun. The content focused on the philosophy of Humanistic Buddhism, the practice among BLIA members, and the application and understanding of faith in daily life. Before the exam, Abbess Manshin of FGS NZ, encouraged participants to approach the exam with a calm mind. Abbess reminded them that exams, like life, offer opportunities to reflect on one’s shortcomings and to seek the right path. When we encounter questions we can’t answer, we solve them one by one. With sincere effort and broader experiences, wisdom naturally grows. BLIA North Island Chapter President Yulin Ku led nearly 60 participants, including BLIA committee members, youth and children’s Dharma class students, demonstrating their strong enthusiasm for learning the Dharma.
Chapter advisor Annie CHANG shared her appreciation for studying together with fellow BLIA members in study groups, discussing topics and researching answers. Through this process, she experienced the joy of Dharma and deepened her understanding of faith. Committee member Sara Ding reflected that the exam revealed the diverse and contemporary ways Buddhist teachings can be practised, not only through volunteer work at the Temple, but also through applying Dharma in the home, workplace and society, while cultivating an open mind and compassion to meet modern challenges. Another member, Yolanda, said the exam helped her better understand BLIA’s values and structure, enhancing her sense of identity and responsibility within the faith.
President Regina LI of YAD 1, described the exam as both a physical and spiritual cultivation. It tested not only knowledge, but also the attitude and mindset in the preparation and test-taking process. She expressed hope to face life’s challenges with wisdom and equanimity. Deputy President Alan HAN shared that preparing for the exam reignited his motivation to study and deepen his understanding of Buddhist foundations.
This Buddhism examination not only improved participants’ understanding of the Dharma but also strengthened their dedication to practising Humanistic Buddhism. It embodied Venerable Master Hsing Yun’s vision of integrating Buddhism into daily life and making daily life more Buddhist, encouraging everyone to contribute towards serving and purifying hearts and minds.
