To deepen understanding of the Platform Sutra’s teachings and embody Humanistic Buddhism, the Humanistic Buddhism Academy Christchurch commences a course on 19th February 2025. The Platform Sutra of the Sixth Patriarch course was led by the Minister in Charge of FGS Christchurch Temple Venerable Juexi, with nearly 30 participants.
The Platform Sutra of the Sixth Patriarch is a key work of Chan Buddhism. It teaches that every sentient being inherently possesses Buddha-nature and wisdom. Venerable Juexi reviewed the origins and lineage of Chan teachings, discussed different versions of the sutra, and detailed the discovery of ancient Dunhuang manuscripts, offering participants a profound historical insight into the text.
Venerable Juexi further explained that the concept of Tathāgatagarbha in Mahayana Buddhism teaches that all beings naturally possess a mind equal to that of the Buddha and are inherently pure. Since everyone has Buddha-nature and is equal in this regard, why cannot everyone achieve the Buddha’s great wisdom and perfect enlightenment? The answer lies in the fact that although sentient beings have an inherently pure mind, it is often obscured by afflictions. Only through diligent practice and the cleansing of these afflictions can the true nature, Buddha-nature, and Tathāgatagarbha be revealed. Therefore, personal cultivation and effort are fundamental determinants of whether one can become a Buddha. Venerable encouraged participants to believe in the Buddha Dharma within themselves and to commit to daily practice for their own and others’ liberation.
Participants appreciated the clear explanations and look forward to future classes. Maggie Duncan, who has lived in Christchurch for years despite her busy schedule, felt grateful for the chance to study Buddhist sutra under the guidance of Venerable.
BLIA South Island Subchapter Senior Advisor, Louisa KUO noted that Venerable Juexi explained how the Platform Sutra laid the foundation for Chan thought and practice after the Tang Dynasty, changing traditional cultivation methods. She recalled the episode where the Buddha was smiling and teaching Mahakasyapa, symbolizing that all beings have equal Buddha-nature—even if defilements cover it in ordinary life, unlike the pure Dharma body of the Buddha. KUO urged everyone to learn from the sutra and work to overcome everyday obstacles.
Participant Crystal WU also expressed her gratitude for the insights shared during the course. She found the study of the sutra’s history especially valuable in the modern era and was inspired by the discovery of the Dunhuang manuscripts. She hopes to visit the British Museum one day to see the authentic original text from Dunhuang of the Platform Sutra in person.
