On the 9th of Sept 2023, BLIA YAD New Zealand held a ‘One Day Meditation Retreat’ at Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Temple Auckland that was participated by 22. A variety of activities including Taichi, sutra transcription, walking meditation, sitting meditation and singing were carried out.

Fo Guang Club President Sinjun Chong, shared the importance of discovering the Chan way of life by putting the Dharma into practice. Through demonstrating dining etiquette, the youths had a better grasp of dining knowledge thus were able to be mindful during eating. YAD committee Thomas Lai, led a Tai Chi session to warm the body and regulate blood flow so that they can better submerge themselves in the joy of meditation.

YAD committee Edwin Teoh, guided youths on the Ten Vows of Samantabhadra Bodhisattva sutra transcription in One Stroke Calligraphy Hall. The participants were also reminded to make positive vows in everyday lives. Larry expressed that he had a deeper understanding of the Ten Vows through transcribing the sutra with a sincere heart.

The walking and sitting meditation by Venerable Rulian allowed youths to settle their bodies and minds, thus feeling the tranquility and serenity from within. The youths were reminded to focus on living in the present moment, and learn to appreciate the causes and conditions, henceforth, having the wisdom and strength to endure adversities.

Upon departing, the youth also practiced giving back by helping out with chores around the Temple. Through cleaning, sweeping, mopping and arranging tables and chairs, they practiced meditative concentration and worked in unison to achieve purified hearts and minds.
