FGS NZ Sangha Day Celebration Honours the Founding Master and Vows to Continue His Legacy

Buddha’s Light International Association (BLIA) New Zealand North and South Island Chapters jointly held the 2026 Fo Guang Shan New Zealand Sangha Offering Dharma Service on 23 August at Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Temple Auckland. Abbess Manshin of FGS NZ and monastics led more than 300 devotees in chanting the Ullambana Sutra. BLIA representatives offered food and light in gratitude to the Triple Gem and in remembrance of Venerable Master Hsing Yun, Founder of Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Order.

The celebration featured songs, drama and recitations reflecting the spirit of passing on the Dharma light. A meaningful and inspiring performance humorously conveyed the message that Buddhas and Bodhisattvas can guide us, but cannot walk the path for us, and that blessings are cultivated through our own actions.

A moving highlight was the joint recitation by the BLIA members and youth of a letter to the Founding Master, Looking Up to a Century of Legacy, Passing the Light Forward. The letter expressed their vow to continue cultivating the seeds planted by the Founding Master, walking the path laid before them, and passing on the light of compassion and wisdom to future generations.

Abbess Manshin explained that Buddha’s Joyful Day is an opportunity to make offerings to the Triple Gem with gratitude and to practise the Founding Master’s spirit of giving. Quoting, Glory belongs to the Buddha; achievements belong to everyone, Abbess encouraged the community to cultivate Right Understanding and Right View, deepen wisdom through practice, and cultivate compassion through service and responsibility.

President Yulin KU of BLIA North Island mentioned that 2026 marks 60 Years of Passing the Light, Honouring a 100-Year Legacy. She encouraged members to be a light for others, bringing joy and hope to the wider community. President James LOW of BLIA South Island expressed gratitude to the monastics for their guidance and for organising various community activities that deliver kindness and positive values in society.

Following the Dharma Service, monastics conducted an alms procession along the courtyard. In the afternoon, the Three-Period Amitabha Dharma Service was held, bringing the Month of Filial Piety and Gratitude to a meaningful conclusion.
